Huckabee in Columbia, SC

Bookmark and Share

Huckabee6I had the privilege of meeting Governor Mike Huckabee at an event today in Columbia, SC. The campaign had brought him within two or three miles of my home on three occasions, but each time I managed to be out of town. I decided that a trip to Columbia would be worth the effort, and believe me, it was.

The attendance at our event at the Congaree Grill was approximately 100-125. I heard that Mike had just spoken to the USC College Republicans to a group of about 150. Awesome turnouts!Apparently some staff is now being stationed in SC and the grassroots campaign is really going to start taking off. That’s actually my official guess about the mysterious “V-Day” starting soon. I think it’s going to be something like “Victory through Volunteers” or something to that effect. Just a guess.I had a chance to briefly meet Mike Campbell, son of former SC Governor Carroll Campbell, who I believe will be heading up the campaign in SC. Between the Carroll family and that of former SC Governor David Beasley, the Huckabee campaign has an amazing foundation of support on which to build a solid effort in South Carolina. Combined they represent the SC Governorships from 1987-1999. Surely there is still some organization there from which to draw.

I’m posting a couple of the pictures I took below. Click on any image for the full size. If you see the picture with Mike and the boy named James below, I’ve got to tell you, watch out. He came up with his father from Charleston, is in the 6th grade, and is about as close to a model citizen as you can get. Intelligent, articulate, polite, and interested in politics. Speaking to him you wouldn’t know he was 11. He’s like the next generation of Mike Huckabee. He’ll be Governor one day.

Ya, and it only took four months!
I was slightly late for work that night, but I won’t tell if you won’t. :-)
    Cheers.

Thanks for your kind words, Mr. Hine. We have a thriving grassroots organization here in Charleston. You play a vital role in enlisting upstate supporters for Mike and I cannot wait to see what you will do in the future.

    Thanks Bob and James.
I was surprised at the pictures as well. Usually I end up with shots of the floor, or pictures too dark or light to even tell what they are! I guess these were “meant to be”.
    Grace,
Additional coverage of the events can be found in the USC Newspaper. I tried finding an article in the State for you, but it appears they skipped the event. WIS simply said “he was there”. Most of the coverage appears to be about the Palmetto Family Council straw poll tonight. Watch for that, Mike should do great.
As for people at the event I was at, reaction was positive. I met one Brownback supporter who I think converted to our side. There was also a homeschool family doing their government studies at the event. They said they’ve seen most of the candidates now, but Mike is favorite thusfar. Cool.

So, there really are Brownback supporters? Wow.

Ha. Amazing, right?! No, I don’t think there are so much “Brownback supporters” as there are people trying to decide between Brownback and Huckabee. Once the choice is made, it generally is a choice for Huckabee.
